Plumwood Mountain is a unique state-heritage listed property located on Walbunja Yuin Country in south-east New South Wales. The former home of Val Plumwood, this significant conservation area was returned to traditional custodians at the Batemans Bay Local Aboriginal Land Council (BBLALC) in 2024. The Walbunja Rangers care for the wider conservation property, and a small residential area containing Val Plumwood’s ‘living museum’ is leased to Plumwood Inc. on an ongoing basis. Plumwood Inc. is a not-for-profit volunteer organisation committed to caring for the legacy of Val Plumwood and furthering her vision of decolonial eco-cultural change.
After many years of archival, restoration, and land-back works (plus many incredible residencies as part of the BREW Network), Plumwood Inc. are excited to announce our own residency program for Spring 2025. News about 2026 programs and beyond will be updated on our website later in the year.
Plumwood Inc. are delighted to invite practitioners from any discipline to submit an application to undertake a residency at Plumwood Mountain for 5-10 days between September and November 2025.
Selection of applicants will be guided by:
First Nations opportunity and access.
Relevance of projects to the Plumwood Mountain site, Val Plumwood’s work and legacy, and/or the BBLALC partnership.
Alignment of projects to Plumwood Inc.’s decolonial, ecological and feminist ethos, and wider objectives.
Respect for the sovereignty, knowledges, and cultural practices of the BBLALC and Walbunja Rangers, including familiarity with and adherence to best practice Indigenous Cultural and Intellectual Property (ICIP) protocols (for example, the ethics guidelines outlined by AIATSIS and Creative Australia).
This residency is offered free of charge, however non-Indigenous residents will be asked to contribute $50 for amenities during their stay. Residents will be asked to provide a short written and/or visual report reflecting on their residency at the Mountain, for publication across Plumwood Inc. digital media platforms. We encourage residents to contribute to caretaking activities during their time on the Mountain, and invite applicants to discuss the possibility of presenting a public outcome at the end of their stay, subject to resources and capacity.
Please note: Plumwood Mountain offers rustic off-grid accommodation with minimal amenities in a secluded and cold setting. We require that applicants are comfortable with living minimally and have independent transport to/from the property. We apologise that this is not a wheelchair accessible property.
To submit an application, please complete the submission form link below. Submissions will close on the 31st July, 2025 at 11.59pm. Applicants will be notified of the outcome of their application in early August.
If you are having trouble accessing the link above, please return a completed copy of the pdf form to plumwoodmountaincommittee@gmail.com by the 31st of July 2025.
If this residency is not quite right for you, we encourage you to visit the BREW Network for other opportunities.
We look forward to hearing from you!
